From Strategic Vision to a New Era of Luxury

Marcliffe

The Marcliffe

The Challenge

Following a change in ownership, The Marcliffe entered an important new chapter. With significant investment planned, the ambition was not simply to refurbish the hotel, but to define what the next generation of The Marcliffe should stand for and establish a clear strategic direction for its future.

The challenge was to protect the heritage, reputation and loyal customer base built over many years, while evolving the hotel into a true five-star luxury destination with broader appeal across local, leisure, corporate, events and high-end inbound markets.

Our Approach

Genoa Black worked closely with The Marcliffe and The Balmoral Group teams to define a strategic vision that could provide the foundation for future investment, growth and brand development.

Through strategic immersion, stakeholder engagement, market and competitor insight and collaborative leadership workshops, we explored the hotel’s existing strengths, future opportunities and the experience The Marcliffe wanted to create for its guests, people and community. This was grounded in detailed market analysis and stakeholder insight, which identified opportunities around service quality, market positioning, new audiences, community connection, sustainability and investment.

From this, we developed a clear strategic framework encompassing the hotel’s vision, purpose, values, challenger statement, strategic goals and future priorities, supported by phased INVEST, BUILD and SCALE priorities to help translate the ambition into action.

Three overarching strategic goals were established:

Community & Sustainability
Deepening The Marcliffe’s connection with its community and ensuring its positive impact extends beyond its doors.

People
Putting people at the heart of the hotel’s future, investing in their development, experience and ability to deliver exceptional Scottish hospitality.

Quality Experiences & Investment

Using significant investment in the hotel, its facilities, products and services to elevate quality, create memorable guest experiences and broaden The Marcliffe’s appeal to new audiences.

These closely reflect the goals documented in the final strategic report: delivering exceptional quality experiences and investing in facilities, empowering and investing in people, and championing community engagement and sustainability.

The link between strategy and brand design was forged as a simple brand statement: A couthie character, on the tree lined slopes above the river Dee, where northern lights shine on sparkling nights. A place in hearts and minds of Loons and Quines. Marcliffe, memories are made.

From Strategy to Brand Design

With a clear direction established for the business, its audiences, guest experience, people and future ambition, we used this strategic thinking to shape the next evolution of The Marcliffe brand.

The refreshed brand strategy and brand identity were built directly from this foundation, ensuring the brand reflected not only The Marcliffe’s heritage, but where the hotel wanted to go next.

The new identity balances The Marcliffe’s established reputation and sense of heritage with a more contemporary expression of luxury, creating a brand capable of resonating with loyal guests while broadening its appeal to new audiences.

By connecting business strategy, investment, experience and brand, we created one coherent platform for The Marcliffe’s next chapter.

Creating a Platform for Growth

The result is a clear strategic growth framework that gives ownership and leadership a shared direction and a platform against which future investment, development and commercial decisions can be made.

Importantly, the work went beyond defining the vision. It established practical priorities across investment and facilities, service quality, people and culture, customer acquisition, new products and experiences, community engagement and sustainability, providing a roadmap for moving from strategic ambition towards delivery.

Rather than change for change’s sake, the strategy provides a framework for evolving The Marcliffe with purpose: protecting its legacy while increasing its relevance, diversifying its audience, elevating the guest experience and strengthening its position as a leading luxury hospitality destination.
