My Growth Journey with Genoa Black
Tomas Morris, Genoa Black's most recent intern shares his views, and his experience of his time with the team.
From my very first day at Genoa Black, I was welcomed as part of the team. Despite the nerves I had from the warnings about the "big, bad" world of work that I'd heard from family and career advisors, my experience has been the complete opposite.
Genoa Black has been nothing but supportive and encouraging. The team promptly put my mind at ease. As I met more team members and learnt about their tasks, I got a sense of the culture shared at Genoa Black.
From light-hearted conversations, supportive training, collaboration, and perhaps most importantly, their time and attention. The combination of these characteristics provided me with the perfect environment to start my professional journey.
Highlights
My first experiences in a client facing environment provided unique learning opportunities not accessible through university. Mainly strengthening my understanding of key concepts through application of previously learnt theory to real clients.
While GB client work was the main focal point, perhaps one of the most enjoyable aspects for me was the work I completed assisting GB in improving their own brand communication. Following a competitor landscape study, providing my recommendationsto the attentive team was a true highlight.
Key Learnings
One of Genoa Black’s core offerings included providing growth strategy consulting to their clients. The opportunity to conduct a business plan of my own based on growth strategy for an investment opportunity I produced and received feedback throughout the entire process was an exceptional experience.
Another of my tasks at Genoa Black involved trialing writing copy for a client’s LinkedIn. While previous university projects had required this of me, this client work accentuated the importance of writing purposeful and focussed copy and provided me with first-hand experience of creating content for a real business.
A key takeaway from my experience was the collaborative approach at the heart of GB’s service, and perhaps of consulting work in general. GB’s client work was varied with each one demanding its own understanding, challenges, and approach to provide a bespoke solution best suited to their needs.
In the varied client work I experienced during my time at GB, the skill of presenting and the creation of succinct presentation packs was echoed throughout. This further developed my confidence in building and delivering logical and concise presentations.
Going Forward
With a newfound trust and understanding in my diverse array of marketing tools, including a few new techniques up my sleeve, this experience has given me the assurance needed to continue my professional journey with confidence.
Therefore, while Genoa Black are in the business of moving organisations forward, I myself can say they have also had this impact on me, from both a personal and professional standpoint.
